Where the Wild Things Are is a touching movie based on the Maurice Sendak beloved classic. The movie is directed by Spike Jonze with great visual effects by the Jim Henson people. The movie is not for kids, but for adults who read the book when they where children and loved it. It is kind of scary and dark for kids and will be above their heads. The book was kind of dark and so the movie does well to keep this. The movie strikes a strong emotional chord and is more emotionally realistic then most movies. I cannot express how great it is too see a movie set aside CG in favor of real puppets. It lends the characters much more believability and connection. Great movie about family and growing up as a kid. Must see. Great soundtrack too! Follow the link below for a great Fan site.

Hi guys we went to a mixed tape showing of "Transformers: the movie" last night and it was awesome. I had forgotten how awesomely bad 80's stuff was. Guys from the movie show on WUAG 103.1Fm radio UNCG were there and gave out some prizes for Transformers trivia. The first two videos highlight Stan Bush and his contribution to the 80's and I believe that last one is not one of his songs but still an awesome part of the 80's. (p.s. I have a friend named Robert who has just gotten his own radio spot on WUAG on thursday 11am-1pm, check it out)

Night Paddle

Hi Guys, I recently went on a night kayak paddle with my wife and Father-in law. It was the first time the park had tried it. There was about 22 or so people at the event. It was a perfect evening and although we could not see much, it was perfect weather and peaceful. The water was as smooth as glass and if you stopped and listened you could just hear the paddle dip into the water or the flock of geese wings flapping above you. The sky was magical that night with some beautiful colors in the sky. I wanted to sketch my impression of the evening. I can't decide if I like the one with the paddler(me?) or without. A.A.F Tank Museum

I visited the A.A.F. Tank Museum in Danville, Virginia again over the weekend. They had a special event this weekend, where you could watch a demonstration of a real military flamethrower (one of the very few in the world) . The Flamethrower as you can see from this video is intense.They had a manikin setup named Flammable Fred, which promptly became engulfed in flames. It really shows what kind of a nightmare war is to imagine that hitting your friend. The heat coming off the flamethrower was incredible and you could feel it from a pretty far distance. The video shows him starting to purge the fuel, and after that I didn't realize the camera was still rolling. They also had a tank crushing a car and sub machine gun demos. It is a really interesting historical museum and is worth the visit.

Rorschach is one of the most interesting characters in the Watchmen and so I thought I would do some fun sketches of him. He is an interesting symbol of justice, and you have to love the mask. Done in Painter X and Photoshop, about half and half.

Watchmen Movie Review

Hi Guys, here is my late review of the Watchmen movie. For anyone who has read the graphic novel you will definitely know that the novel lives up to the hype. So how does director Zack Snyder's interpretation work on the big screen? Well, the short answer is not very well. Visually the movie brings the illustrations of Dave Gibbons to stunning realization. This along with the fantastic opening credit sequence are the two high points. From there on it becomes a noble failure. Casting was great in that they used less known actors, but their were some weakspots, like Mathew Goode, and Malin Akerman. Malin Akerman looks like Laurie but, fails to capture Laurie's character. Mathew Goode is a good actor just not right for the role of Ozymandias. The music is one of the most dissappointing parts of the movie and is probably the worst in a movie I have seen. It is jarring and missed placed and pulls you out of any emotional scene. It also adds to the dairy farm sized amount of cheese in the movie, that is not in the novel. The story is pretty much untouched except for the ending which was not well done. There were also a few parts that were changed to up the gore factor. Also there is a graphic sex scene which comes off like comic geek porn and is pretty much an insult. The main gripe I have with the movie is that the movie strips any emotional connection with the characters and ruins the detective story. The end of the world is imminent and as viewers you don't really care. In the end, the movie becomes a shallow visual companion to the great graphic novel. Watch it to satisfied your curiousity and at best it should be a rental.

FOTC Poster Artistry

Hi this is my effort at a Flight of the Conchords Band Poster. Their was a competition on their website for fans to submit a new poster for the show. The cutoff was yesterday and thanks to their tricky and my lack of reading I missed the deadline. It was yesterday at 11:59 am and I thought it was 11:59 pm, which makes entirely more sense. Anyway I thought I would share my work. I think I would have had a strong chance but, lesson learned and I did have fun making it.

Hi, I thought I would try to show some of my process. It kind of changes depending on the project. Sometimes I sketch it out, or some times I just start with silhouettes and shapes. If I do a sketch, it is not detailed, it is more about placement, ideas, and rhythms. At first I tried to upload this as a animated GIF file, but eventually I learned that Blogger doesn't support them. So I made a video. It is really poor quality, but I think it still shows the process. I may just post bigger images of the process sided by side next time. Well it finally has happened. I am now a husband to my new beautiful wife Margaret. After years of being together it is both weird and exciting to officially be husband and wife. We got married on a beautiful farm in Mcleansville, NC on September 27, 2008. Thanks to a lot of great close friends and family we were able to have a really great time. Special thanks to the bridal party and family members who helped with the setup, not to mention our great friend Joey who was responsible for all the brilliant pictures surrounding our wedding and for the above image. Honeymoon part1

Hi everyone, I have been away for awhile on our honeymoon to Jamaica, hence the lack of updates to the blog. It was really a great time, and these are a few of the highlights. The 2nd and 3rd pictures are from a pirate cave we visited which was amazing. You could swim through and come out another side and you could also climb some steps inside (if you have watched the new Count of Monte Cristo movie it was like that). Also did some snorkeling and some horesback riding where we took the horses into the water and also explored a sugar estate. We had a really cool guide whose name was English and he was telling us all about the history of the area and Jamaica.

Hi Guys, last weekend I joined Margaret's family on a trip to the AAF Tank Museum in Danville Virginia. Let me tell you guys, this is one really extensive collection of military artifacts dating from 1509 to the present. It is one of the most extensive in the world and everyone truly owes it to themselves to make a visit (its not far at all 40mins. from Greesnboro). It is a Giant warehouse with over 100 tanks, and many other artifacts. They actually have one of Eva Braun's dresses (Hitler's wife). Also behind that dashing solider in the picture above to the left, is the wet submarine that was used in the Bond movie "Thunderball", if you care for those things. Here is the digital painting made from the earlier sketch below. I used mostly photoshop for the first time, and I had fun messing with all the brush types. I don't generally do fan art such as this, but with my love of the new batman movie I felt it deserved something. Much like the new series of movies by Nolan I wanted to focus on the grittier batman and specifically the part in the movie where both Batman and Harvey Dent lose. Let me know what you think

Here is what I have been working on. I wish I could make the video a little bigger, but I don't think I can. It is about 15 seconds long, and is taking a lot longer than I thought, but I am still enjoying it and will continue to work on it. Hi Everyone, here is a peek at the progress on the animation. The second page of the storyboard is still not really final and it is really general in a way. I see it more as a guideline then what the final animation will look like. It will also be in color, and will be in contrast to the black and white deer. As you can see it will be a journey for the deer and it will end with a temple scene where something happens :)

Animated Movie

Hi Guys, I am doing an animated 2d short-film for my independent project. I am basically starting from scratch, so it has been difficult. This clip is about the first 4 seconds of the movie and it is 47 frames. I am using Corel Painter for animation and assets. I will eventually be using After Effects for some editing and sound. The movie has a lot to do with my subconscious and about life. There will be a deer involved and it is a mix of imagination and storytelling. Hope you enjoy the very short clip and stay tuned to find out where the eyelashes go :)

"Red Still Life" 11X14 Acrylic Paint

This is my first acrylic painting. It is different from the usual oil paint I use, but I enjoy its wash-like capabilities and it is definitely not as strong in odor as oil paints. I did have to get used to the quick drying time. I am pretty happy the way it turned out. I did it in about 5 hours.

It's that time of the year again, where we become retail chain lovebots and give flowers and boxes of chocolate. It's a pretty silly made up holiday. Nonetheless, you can't help but look at people around you who have love. This is a very fast painting of two of my friends in the romantic impressionist style :) Let me know what you think.

"My desk" Digital oil painting 3x2

I broke my 1 hour limit on this "speed" paint and did it in 3 hours, but I will try to go back down to 1 hour. I enjoy the blue light on the speaker controller and so I chose it as my focus for this painting.
